II. Annual Report of the Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions.

Another year is past v.ith its viet(jries and tests on the For- eign Field as well as the home land. Another page has been added to the history of Missions. While some have left the ranks, others have fallen at their post of duty, the Lord has graciously spared all our Missionaries.

The offerings for this cause have been larger than ever, or ti^e times as much as ten years ago. Ten years ago our people gave $1.31 per member ; last year they gave ^4:.22 per member. During the ten years the membership increased 78%, while the Foreign Missionary offerings increased 472%. Our Con- ference now supports sixteen Foreig-n ^Missionaries or one Missionary for every 80 members at home. This is especially encouraging when we compare it with the figures given by good authority stating that in 100.5 among the seven principal Protestant churches in the U. S., the United Presbyterians led with 1.77 per member for Foreign Missions down to the Methodists who gave .46 per member. The members and friends of the Gospel Herald Society Mission at Washington, N. J., have sent a large box of clothing, muslins, bed clothes, etc., to the Orphanage at Hadjin. Turkey, valued at |62.50.

China.

Bro. C. F. Snyder, who had spent nine years in China, prin- cipally on the Western borders, had been home on furlough and left again for the borders of Thibet, sailing from Seattle, Wash.. February 4, 1908, accompanied by Bro. V. G. Plymire. Bro.

30 TWENTY-FIFTH

Plymire was converted in the Gospel Worker Society Mission at York, Pa., and was a faithful, steady standby of the Mission. For the last four years he was a member of the Gospel Herald Society. The Lord has blessed him with a robust body, an energetic will, and a conscientious spirit. After a very stormy voyage across the Pacitlc the}' arrived at Yokohama, Japan, February 21. On March 11. they stopped oft' at Nank- ing, where Brother Suj'der was married in the American Con- sulate to Miss Phebe Brenneman, a member of the Indiana Conference, but since transferred to this Conference. From here they went in a house-boat up the Han River, had their boat wrecked, goods soaked, and narrowly escaped with their lives, arriving at Taocliow, on the borders of Thibet, August 10, after a wearisome journey of 190 days.

Chilk.

Eleven yeai-s ago Brother and Sister Weiss arrived in Chile. The Lord signally blessed their labors, supplied workers, gave them converts, so that their regular membership swelled up to betw^een seven and eight hundred. Brother H. L. Weiss is Superintendent of the whole Avork in Chile. Of late the Lord has been somewhat sifting the W(jrk. Some of the workers left them (however, none of those belonging to our Church), some started opposition, but (lod takes care of His Work. We are supporting twelve missionaries on this field, ten of whom are members of our Church. La.st January Brother M. P. Zook was married to Miss Anna Erskine, who went to Chile with Brother and Sister Weiss three years ago. Brother Zook is stationed at Osorno with the oversight of a few outstations. He had been sick of typhoid fever, but the Lord delivered him.

Brother and Sister Feldges are still at Temuco. T.iast sum- mer they finished their nice little chapel and had a tine Sunday School and ever}' prospect foi- a good, strong work. In Jan- uary a great fire swept over the town, destroying their chapel, which was a great blow to the work. He rej)orted olS meetings and about 1000 calls. Bro. A. E. Dawson finished the chapel at Loncoche, and he and his wife opened a school of 40 pupils, and also a Sunday School of about the same number.

Brother and Sister Gunstadt report good meetings and a large, flourishing church on the Island of Chiloe. They made several trips to the colonies, where they had large crowds.

Brother Weiss Avrites that Brother Orellano, a native helper supported by ns. resigned from the active work on account of ill health.

TlTRKKV.

It is now ten years since Sister Lambert came to Hadjiu, and although there is always a great deal of suft'ering and extreme

ANNUAL CONFERENCE 31

poverty in the city, last winter was the severest since she is on the field. As the crops of 1007 were almost a total failure, food stuffs were scarce and extremely high, consequently suffering among tlie many poor was intense. They are still looking to tlie Lord for the necessary funds to build a Boys* Home in a healthier locality outside the city. The Sultan has conceded to many reforms which will make things much easier for the missionaries. Brother ISarker, the !^u[)erintendout, and his family are at home on furlough at present. Workers are needed very much in Hadjin. Just beftu-e going to press J i-eceived a cablegram announcing the death hy typhoid fever of Mrs. Henry Maurer, one of their devoted workers. Miss Elizabeth Ha>\'ley was a physician and was married to Brother Maurer only a few years ago. She \\as ii great bless- ing to the work and her death should stir some one up to take her place in the great harvest field.

III. Report of the Superintendent and Board of

Trustees of the Orphanage and Home, from

October 2, 1907, to October 1, 1908.

During the year we still continued to make improvements. ^\e built chutes fi-oni the feed bins alongside the thrashing floor into the entry below so tliat the various feeds need not be carried below.

We built a concrete enclosure ai-ound the spring at the up- per part of the former dam and connected it with iron pipes to the ram, so that now we get clear water out of the rock for man and beast; a concrete wall around the spring in front of the spring house for clean water for washing and for a gold flsli l)ond ; a concrete lic^uid manure cistern in the barnyard 5 feet X 5 feet 10 feet deep ; a new water coui-se through the upper part of the meadow in order to get a more direct course and farm a part of the meadow land.

Trees were cut down along the middle fences, the middle fences ren)oved. and the stumps dynamited. Thou.sunds of feet of lund)er and many cords of wood were thus realized, whicli are not yet disposed of.

We purchased a new two-horse walking cultivator, a four- inch rim four-horse wagon, a new circular saw and ripping table, a Koss shredder, and a low wheel one-horse wagon for forage hauling.

The gasoline engine furnishes power for the thrasher and separator, grist mill, fodder cutter, saw and grind stone.

We have the same horses we had last year and they are giv- ing excellent service.

32 TWENTY-FIFTH

We hare more thau double the niimbev of cattle we had last year. We have 24 head of cows, 9 heifers, four of which are pure bred aud registered Holstein-Friesians of high breeding, one large thorough-bred aud registered Hoi stein -Friesian bull, Vernon De Kol Count.

Our sale of milk tliroughout the year averaged 1224.84 per month. We sold calves for an average of |18.<S7 per month, making a total average yield per month of |243.71 from the cows.

We st;;hle-fed the cows all sumnier on green rye, meadow and field grass, sugar cane, ensilage corn, and sugar corn fodder. Cow stables are manured twice a day and the manure hauled directly into the fields. The cows are cleaned daily. This makes much work, but is profitable.

Our breeding sows had nice litters in the sxjring, which we sold at a good price. Several have litters now which are selling at fair j)rices. Three breeding hogs were donated during the year.

We have a few pens of nice chickens liose-combed Brown Leghorns and single-combed White Leghorns. Two incubators were donated.

We sold last year's wheat crop in the fall for .fl.05 per bushel F. O. B. Centre Valley, Pa. This year's crop was real good, but the acreage was not so large.

Potatoes sold mostly at 60 cents per bushel. This year's crop was real good considering the drought and are selling at present from 8(1 to 90 cents per bushel for choice.

The sugar corn yield v.-as very good and profitable.

The field corn yield is the best Ave have yet had thus far.

The hay croj) was abundant. From one field we averaged 0^2 tons of hay per acre.

Oats yielded approximately 50 bushels per acre.

The Le Conte pear crop was again large, for which we found ready sale.

In spring we planted loO peach trees, GO apple trees, 59 pear trees, and 9 plum trees. They look promising.

The Board of Trustees bought the i)r(^»perty of the late Henry Sell, of Centre X'alley. Pa., containing 10^/, acres of land, 4 or 5 acres of which are splendid meadow land for pasturing our young live-stock. A nice large 9 i-oom brick house is on the premises in which a small Orphanage may be started. A barn also is on the premises.

Charles J. Kline, the farmer; Titus Hottel, the herdsman, and Albert Kotherman, the hired man, have done good service and seem fo enjoy the work for the Lord on this line.

We are looking to the Lord and this Conference for a more thorougl) orgnnizati<m of the temporal economy of this Home

Farm. Also do we expect that in the near future we shall be enabled to start Orphanage work on a small scale.

We thank the Lord for past victories won and look forward for greater blessings from the Giver of all good and perfect gifts.

The Board of Trustees asks the Conference to increase the number of Trustees for the future.
